It's July of 2023 and its hot!!!! Some people are saying the hottest its ever been in over 120,000 years!!! Of course, we didn't keep records of such things that far back and some simple research shows that the highest temperature recorded was in California, 134 degrees, in Death Valley, California, on July 10, 1913. So its been hot before and it's gonna be hot again!
By 1976, my family had installed central air conditioning, but as a kid, we had no such thing. A large exhaust fan would suck the warm air out of the house through our garage. We never complained. It was Summer!!!
Summer meant outside parties, and my parents and their friends had some doozies. OLD SETTLERS DAY 1976 was held on the weekend of our countries 200th birthday!!! The Bicentennial. My Mom and her friend had the McCabe Farm so decorated with stars and stripes, that the local paper came out to do a story. It was a hot weekend. It was July!!!! But, dozens of friends and family partied and slept in UN AIR CONDITIONED tents, campers and living room floors, for three days!!!! Even though I had only turned 17, I was allowed to drink beer and celebrate just like the adults!!! The only catch was I had to play my guitar and make music for the party!!!! Hell yeah, I could do that!!! So along with my friend Eric on bass, and Henry Jones on plasic horn and guitar along with Ms Karen on vocals, The OLD SETTLERS BAND performed on July 4th 1976. I remember the mantra was.....Its been 200 years....and the Liberty bell is broke...so everyone must take a TOKE!!!!!
Yes, it was HOT!!!! but unlike today, we didn't complain...we just wore cut off jeans, took frequent dips in the pool, girls dressed in thin clothes or bikinis and we all embraced the heat and the mood of the times!!! The 70's was a great time to be a teenager. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the central air in my ORANGE ROOM when we finally got home.
