My grandmother Mary.
My moms mother was a piano player and was actually quite good. I used to enjoy running my hands across her ivory keys at frequent visits and always admired her prowess on her beloved boogie woogie pieces.
Often, my brothers and I would spend the night at my Grandparents house. She enjoyed having us and it gave my parents a well deserved night out alone.
Grandma Mary was my first fan and audience. I used to love making her laugh and her and Jack were always eager to let me put on some kind of show for them.
Grandma was a frequent visitor to
my Orange room and I‘d player her rock records that I thought she would appreciate. I remember playing her selections from ELP, mostly Keith Emerson’s work. I also played her side two of In Collaboration With The Gods by Michael Quattro. I played her Jesus Christ Superstar too as well as many Beatles songs.
Like I said, we stayed overnight many times and
there was a ritual that was always followed at visits.
A. There would be the event such as a movie or trip to the Park
B. An awesome dinner. I loved my grandmothers cheeseburgers with butter on each bun and plenty of lime jello with pears. I don’t think I’ve had that treat since she passed.
C. Shower and then toy time. The toys were playschool and are still around. Made in the early 60's out of wood, these gave us hours of Fun.
D. Bedtime snack. My wife is the only other person I know that includes snack time into the nightly ritual. Without her, my kids would have never had snack time which usually included a glass of Orange Crush. Unfortunately I wet the bed for years so this wasn’t the best idea I suppose.
E. The next morning always included stalking the grandparents in military like maneuvers until we were allowed to join them for a morning cuddle.
Wonderful memories and a very loving environment. It was like having a second set of parent. I can only hope my grandson can enjoy us often enough to make such an impression.
